Journal Week 10/6: Rehearsal in Groups

After hearing and playing near clusters of different instruments, I got a feel of how the ensemble sounds as a whole compared to what I normally hear in practice (The low brass, the trumpets and the percussionists, which is my section). I also got to hear different sections such as the flutes and clarinets that I don't normally hear because they are in the front of the classroom. Finally, I got to figure out what my contribution to the percussion section sounds like and I got to figure out what roles the other percussionists play when I would hear them individually. In personal practice, this experience allows me to know my role in the ensemble and adjust my playing style to fit the band. In rehearsal, I now listen to the some of the woodwind instruments and listen more to their music instead of the brass section. In terms of our performance in the future, I got a glimpse of what we will sound like because listening to the separate sections all together was like listening to a smaller version of the band. Overall, it was a great learning experience to be able to rehearse with different types of instruments.
